Veneers

Veneers
Veneers have recently become increasingly popular within cosmetic dentistry. They have been used on a number of makeover TV shows in the US and Europe and this has increased their popularity.

Celebrities such as Tom Cruise are fans of veneers and have a close relationship with their cosmetic dentists!

Basically, the veneers, which are either porcelain or plastic, are placed over the front teeth to improve on the shape and colour of your natural teeth. This is after your teeth are filed down – yuk!

They can last from ten to fifteen years depending on your cosmetic dentist. You must continue to maintain your smile by brushing and flossing daily and you must also go for regular checkups with your cosmetic dentist.

However, you must consider the drawbacks to this form of cosmetic dentistry. In some cases the cosmetic dentist may feel that more tooth needs to be removed than is desirable to get the best effect from veneers. This can obviously be invasive and damaging to your teeth.

Also, you may face extra sensitivity. It can even be difficult to talk at first especially to pronounce “S” and “F” sounds – so beware – ask your cosmetic dentist before you proceed!

The cost of veneers will depend on your region and of course on the experience and quality of your cosmetic dentist. Ask them for pictures of previous patients and really look around before you make your decision.

You may be able to get an improvement in your smile by using other forms of cosmetic dentistry that are not so invasive and mouth altering. I think that veneers should be one of the last options after other techniques have been considered.

That being said, of course the results can be extremely good, but remember, there is serious maintenance required every 10 years or so. Once you have filed your natural teeth down they will not grow back so don’t make your decision solely by the hype round this form of cosmetic dentistry. Respect your teeth and read more… .

There are new advances that allow a qualified, artistic dentist to add veneers to your exisitng teeth without drilling away any enamel. Not everyone is a candidate for DURAthin veneers, but if you are, it could elimate the concerns of having traditional veneers. If you want to have them removed in 20 years, you could! You should be sure your cosmetic dentist can show you examples of their work, so you don't end up with bulky looking teeth.

I had veneers applied over 20yrs ago. My dentist is amazed that they have lasted this long. The color has detoriated due to caffine and smoking, but they sure beat the heck out of my orginial teeth.
I'm fifty four and just now are my gums shrinking so that the edge of the veneer is not just visible yet.
I've heard some people having gum surgery to draw the gums back down. I won't do that. Shoot, I've had 20plus years with a nice smile, ain't got that much longer to smile about things.

I had veneers put on 8 yrs ago and if I had to do it again I would not. Now they must be replaced and the cost is more than I can afford. I should have kept my own teeth they were not that bad.

I have had veneers for 1 year. They leave off the carving down of your teeth and the many shots they have to give you during each visit. I had to have around 40 shots my first fit. If I have my teeth exposed in cold weather and I close my mouth man do they hurt. Sometimes they feel unnatural. I am adjusting to them but it took at least 6 months for me. I am happy with how natural they look. I have to tell people I have them if I want them to know. Know one has ever guesses. It is not a pleasant procedure. But if you have a severe problem with your teeth it is worth it. But if you have other options I would pursue them. I believe everyone should look their best and if that is all you have I do think it is worth it. But it is a lot.

I used cosmetic whitening, also I was very sensitive by the fourth episode, but was 10 shades whiter...I did this all in one day, a five hour procedure with all cast taken, and all old fillings desposed of, and new ones in place waiting for caps, and bridge work next time, about five appointments to a very beautiful new smile, with my own teeth in which will not be removable, like so many my age, WOW, I just am very blessed is all I can say...WOW! IAM A SMOKER TOO, SO THIS IS QUITE HARD TO STAY WITH THE 48 HOUR PROGRAM OF WHITE FOODS ONLY, AS I AM AN ADVOCATE OF THE WHITER THE BREAD THE SOONER YOU ARE DEAD!!! And next our my veneers, and my two bridges. I am 50, look 35, no plastic surgeries...yet! But I have had my two knees replaced. OUCH! A necessity for sure, new contacts for the first time, just to blue the ole eyes up a bit, but of course for my eye site, also designer gla** two pair with no line bi-focal, transitions, slim lens, scratch cover, and last but not least, lens insurance, six month supplies of soft lens toric contacts(with lots of other supply perks) all for the very reasonable cost of $1,000.62., not to mention retina testing, glaucoma, and every eye test available to man kind at this point, this is also what I am doing for my smile but the cost is $14.000.00+. So very worth it, much better to eat with out picking my teeth, than having to pick a new car...
